Neutropenic Diet



Ini merupakan aku punya assignment yang diberi oleh my lecturer.
 Him ask to write about neutropenic diet just about 500 words. Alah li-ma ra-tus je pon. Je Pon. Eceh. Sungguh masa buat ni nak capai lima ratus tu punya la rasa payah. Lagi masa aku nak menulis tentang benda ni ada yg mengacau. Lama la aku ambil masa untuk siapkan esaimen ni. So, here aku punya ringkasan tentang neutropenic diet. Memang betol-betol lima ratus perkataan cuma ada la lebih dalam lima belas perkataan. hehehe. Feel free to read.

Neutropenic diet is recommended for patients who have undergone chemotherapy or other treatment for cancer. It is special diet for patient that having neutropenia which have a weak immune system. Neutropenia is condition when neutrophils level in the blood is below than 500 cells per mm cube. Neutropenia may caused by cancer and cancer treatment. About 50% of people that receiving chemotherapy has neutropenia. Neutropenia can cause patients get infections easily because they do not have enough neutrophils to destroy the harmful pathogens. Most of these infections can affect lungs, mouth, throat, sinuses or skin. Neutropenic diet should be followed by the patient until the doctor tells patient to resume his or her regular diet. Typically, patients undergoing autologous stem cells transplant will follow this diet during pre-transplant chemotherapy and for the first three month after transplant. Patients that need to undergo allogenic stem transplant also need to follow neutropenic diet during pre-chemotherapy until they no longer take immunosuppressive drugs. People who have being treated for HIV/AIDS and who have had organ transplant also need to follow this diet.

Many kinds of germs can be found in the foods and beverages that can cause illness. Patient that has neutropenia can be easily infected by these kinds of germ that reside inside the foods and beverages. So, the neutropenic diet aim’s to protect bodies from harmful bacteria and other organism which are found in certain foods and beverages. There are some general precautions or basic guidelines about neutropenic diet. Raw meat, fish and uncooked or undercooked eggs should be avoided. Meats should be buying from vacuum-packed lunch rather than freshly sliced meats. Meat should be cooked until it is well-done and eggs should be thoroughly cooked. The egg yolks should not be runny. Uncooked vegetables should not be eaten. Salads also should be avoided. Raw nuts should not be taken. So, try eating baked or roasted nuts instead freshly consumed it. Fresh fruit also should be avoided. Eat only fruit that a thick skin can be peel off.  Only pasteurized milk, yogurt, cheese and other dairy products can be consumed.  Else, it is important for patient to drink clean water. Tap water at home is safe. If bottled water it must be distilled, labelled reverse osmosis or be filtered through a 1 micron filter. If it well water it should be boiled at least one minute. While handling or cooking food, hands should be washed regularly. The cooking surfaces and utensils need to be clean to avoid infections.

In neutropenic diet, it is important to using pepper, salt and other herbs and spices while cooking food because they are beneficial as they help in fighting of infections. Neutropenic diet recipes should always be prepared by using herbs and other seasoning or low sodium seasoning. Neutropenic diet has recommend foods that can safely consume include bread rolls, muffins and donuts without buts. Another also potato chips, french toast, popcorn, crackers, cooked pastas and rice. Whole milk, buttermilk, homemade milkshakes, commercial frozen milkshakes, packaged cheese like mozzarella, parmesan and cheddar can be eaten. Also canned juices and canned fruits are safe to consume.
